How to determine the tightness of the timing belt

08-07-2023

If the timing belt is not tensioned or the tension is too loose, the impact force at the moment of starting may cause the timing belt to jump teeth, which is one of the common failure forms in the timing belt. If the timing belt is over-tensioned, it will cause increased noise, accelerate the wear of the timing belt and timing pulley, and reduce the service life of the timing belt. So the proper tension is to extend the service life of the timing belt.

How to detect the tightness of the timing belt?

1. Hand feeling detection method

The easiest way to check the tension of the timing belt is to firmly press the belt between the two pulleys with your thumb when the timing belt is stationary. The pressing force is about 10kg. If the sinking of the timing belt is between 20 mm and 30 mm, it means that the tension of the timing belt is basically within the normal range. If it exceeds this tension range, it means that the timing belt is loose and needs to be readjusted.

2. Dedicated tensiometer detection method

The tension meter tests the tightness of the timing belt, and the testing method is different according to different timing belt models. Before testing, you need to make preparations, choose the correct test head and operation method, etc. (For specific operability, please consult our technology)
